When this game was first announced, the “trailer” only showed a cast of characters from both the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem series in their original artworks and then at end there was something supernatural happening in a modern city.
Then it was awhile (three years?) before having any sort of updates, so many people believed the project was canceled. There was at least one post on GameInformer and other sites saying that “it’s on schedule” but nothing else besides that.
With the last Nintendo Direct, we finally got a real trailer confirming its existence and showing off some cutscenes and gameplay. There are many who are excited while others have concerns, like how it looks more like the Persona series than anything else. How do you feel about it? I’ll tell you some of my thoughts…
Honestly, I didn’t quite know what I was watching at first until I saw the pegasus knight within about twenty seconds of the trailer. It looks as though most of the characters are new, as I and others couldn’t quite recognize too many people from either series. Although, when I watched the trailer again, some of them had similarities to say Marth and Caeda. Younger Tiki is definitely in it as what looks to be a prominent role.
I’m not so sure how I feel about the setting. It looks almost too modern… with little to no medieval references or themes besides some of the armor and weapons. We’ll just have to see more of the game to get a better idea of if, for example, most of the game is set in Japan. Shibuya looks fun and great, don’t get me wrong, I just want to be able to see a lot of the Fire Emblem universe as well.
While there wasn’t much of the story told, I’d like to great dialogue between all the characters as well as a good story. *Spoilers* It would be neat if there was a situation similar to one in Shin Megami Tensei IV where Jonathon and Walter discover guns, wondering what they are, as they’re going deeper into Naraku. *End Spoilers* It makes sense considering that the different dimensions are drastically different eras.
The gameplay seems to have more of a balance with prominent mechanics from both games. It’s hard to see everything since it goes so fast, but there’ll definitely be a turn-based system. It even looks like you can switch out characters during the battle. GameXplain did a good job of catching and theorizing these things in their analysis of the trailer.
The art styles look great, even if they first appear to be a odd mix. It looks as though most of the big cutscenes will be cel-shaded like in Fire Emblem Awakening.
While this new trailer has changed expectations from what people were originally imagining from the first announcement of the crossover, I’m going to keep an eye on this game. I have high hopes that Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei will turn out great. Hopefully it’ll come out this year because the Wii U needs all the support it can get, especially with The Legend Of Zelda being pushed into 2016.
What do you think so far?
